If you enjoy live theater and you’ll be visiting New Hampshire this summer, plan to attend a performance at Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth Village. This outstanding venue features a 28-foot proscenium stage and seats up to 282 guests in its auditorium, including orchestra and balcony seating.

Throughout the weeks of July and August, members of the Barnstormers Theatre professional acting company produce one show a week, for a total of eight shows. The Barnstormers Theatre resident group is comprised of theatre professionals as well as local residents.

The Barnstormers Theatre resident summer acting company has been producing shows since 1931. Prior to taking up permanent residence at the Barnstormer Theatre after World War II, the group traveled throughout the surrounding region, "barnstorming" five nights a week.

Today the Barnstormers still produce a new show each week in the summer stock tradition. The Barnstormers produce a variety of plays including traditional favorites as well as some obscure or lesser known and occasionally, new plays.

Although their productions are often comedies, at least one musical and one drama or mystery are usually produced by the Barnstormers each summer. During the summer of 2008, the Barnstormers produced the Broadway classic Babes In Arms; 20th century comedy Blithe Spirit; a dramatization of A Wind in the Willows entitled Toad of Toad Hall; Dial M for Murder; and Dracula, among other plays.

If you’ll be visiting New Hampshire during the months from September through June, you can still enjoy a performance at Barnstormers Theatre. A variety of concerts, dance and drama performances are performed by groups and organizations that rent Barnstormers Theatre throughout the year. Special events and lectures are also held occasionally from September through June.

Many of the groups and organizations that rent Barnstormers Theatre are non-profits, and they produce a variety of interesting and entertaining shows. You can attend a folk, jazz or classical concert, or attend a dance or drama performance. The Arts Council of Tamworth, the local Shakespeare Company and Advice to the Players’ are some of the groups that frequently use Barnstormers Theatre for their events.
